You Got Older is an intimate portrait of a woman’s psycho-sexual trauma as she navigates career and romantic instability while caring for her dying father. The play is inspired by the playwright’s personal experience, and the set design draws heavily from her memories of her family home in Washington state.
The challenge of You Got Older involved sourcing and fabricating props that gelled with the play’s wood-paneled, minimalistic aesthetic, and could live isolated and spotlit as standalone objects on the somewhat bare set. For example, several scenes took place outside in the backyard or garden, with a single large prop — a fire pit, or a planter box — serving as the primary visual indicator of this scene change. Additionally, Cherry Lane Theatre is a small, intimate house, requiring a high level of finish for all these props.

Fun props projects included: designing and bidding out a custom chaise lounge-style bed frame; attempting to perfectly color match a foam avocado to an actual one; creating a prop cheesecake (with real icing) that could support two large lit taper candles on a nightly basis; fabricating a planter box and propping it out with “dead” plants; sourcing set dressing inspired by an adult sleeping in her sister’s childhood bedroom.
