The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse is a very fun new pop musical with lots of super catchy original (yet familiar) Y2K-coded tunes, an extremely energetic cast, and a fairly streamlined props package. The play is primarily set within the great blue void of the Internet, and the key props are largely featured in a few dazzling set pieces: a pair of lemon yellow clothing racks outfitted with hand-picked designer clothes, a set of hot pink kitchenware, and a world of distressed hoarders’ boxes.
This project marks the most clothes I’ve had to purchase for a props package: the always reliable Big Reuse in Gowanus helped me stay on budget as I sourced racks and racks of sequined party dresses and shiny pink stilettos. While the props were fairly minimal, they all needed very intentional color-coding to fit into the world of the set — either hot pink, moody blue, or a lemon yellow accent, generally.
A big shoutout to my associate, Kristen, our intern, Bella, and my artisan pal, Ashanti, for helping me deliver all these pink props!
Fun props projects included: custom spandex microphone covers, comically stiffened push up bras and halter tops, a mercurial “Marie Antoinette” wardrobe prop, and a glitter-fied pink air fryer.
